Day 1: Castellammare del Golfo

Arrive in the historic port town of Castellammare del Golfo, whose roots stretch back to the classical era as the harbor for the ancient towns of Segesta and Erice. Nestled between dramatic mountains and the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea, this charming spot welcomes you with labyrinthine alleys, vibrant piazzas, and a relaxed seaside spirit.

After checking into your accommodation, you'll receive your bicycle and a detailed briefing about the adventure ahead. There’s time to unwind and take a sunset stroll along the marina or dip your feet in the gentle surf. The local trattorias beckon with fresh seafood and Sicilian specialties, perfect for your first taste of the island’s rich flavors.

As night falls, soak up the laid back vibe and anticipate the trekking, cycling, and treasures waiting to be uncovered in the days ahead.

Day 2: Castellammare del Golfo

Today, ride the gentle coastal road to the picturesque hamlet of Scopello, famed for its traditional baglio (courtyard) and historic tuna fishery. Soon, you’ll lock your bikes and don hiking boots for a trek through the wild beauty of the Zingaro Nature Reserve.

The Zingaro’s undulating footpaths thread through dramatic coastal landscapes, revealing hidden coves with crystalline waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Wildflowers, olive groves, and the dazzling hues of the Mediterranean accompany you on every turn.

After your hike, linger in Scopello’s inviting square for a gelato or coffee before pedaling back to Castellammare. This is Sicily at its most pristine and elemental, a blend of sun, salt, and natural wonder.

Day 3: Trapani

Venture inland through classic Sicilian countryside with olive groves and endless vineyards today. The terrain rises and falls gently as you approach one of the island’s greatest archaeological jewels: Segesta. Here, a magnificent Greek temple and a hilltop theater speak of the Elymian Greeks who settled these lands more than 2,500 years ago.

Spend time exploring Segesta’s windswept ruins, then continue along tranquil country roads toward Trapani, the famed "City of Salt." The final kilometers bring you to Trapani’s lively center, with its array of markets, baroque facades, and a salty breeze that hints at the nearby sea.

Night brings the chance to wander Trapani’s promenades and perhaps sample local dishes like pasta with sea urchin or couscous alla trapanese.

Today offers a choose your own adventure twist. If you love a challenge, pedal up to the mountaintop medieval village of Erice. The 11 km climb rises 750 meters with hairpin bends but rewards you with breathtaking views over the Egadi Islands and charming streets lined with pastry shops and stone churches.

If you prefer a gentler day, hop a ferry to Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands. Here electric blue water, sandy coves, and a laid back island vibe await, best explored by bike at your own pace. Enjoy a gelato or fresh seafood lunch right on the beach.

Whether you climb into the clouds or relax on the shore, today uncovers distinct Sicilian treasures of your choosing.

There’s an option to visit-island Mothia, an ancient Phoenician site by boat, peering back in time at this cradle of Mediterranean civilization.

The ride ends in Marsala, world famous for its sweet fortified wine and for being the site of Garibaldi’s landing during the Expedition of the Thousand. Take time to sample Marsala’s signature tipple, stroll the elegant piazzas, and savor another sun drenched Sicilian evening.

As the day closes, the golden hues of the salt flats and Marsala’s lively streets make for a magical backdrop to your journey.

Continue along the sparkling coastline, passing more vineyards and the remains of old feudal farmsteads (bagli). As you approach Mazara del Vallo, you’ll enter a city with the most important fishing fleet in Italy, positioned at the mouth of the Mazaro River.

Mazara’s old town is a tapestry of cultures, from Norman cathedrals to the winding Kasbah quarter where Arabic design, bright colors, and vivid spices hint at Africa’s proximity. Get lost in its alleys before dinner, which is often rich in North African notes, think couscous with fish and plenty of saffron.

End the day watching fishermen at work and the town’s illuminated facades reflected in the water.

Arrive at Selinunte’s extraordinary archaeological park, where collapsed and standing Doric columns overlook the sea. Wander between ruins, find a perch above the blue expanse, and imagine ancient ships arriving at this once bustling port.

There’s time to celebrate your final night with a swim at the beach or a toast at a seaside taverna before reflecting on all you’ve discovered.

Arrival & Departure Details

Arrival

Your cycling adventure begins in the charming seaside town of Castellammare del Golfo, nestled along Sicily’s spectacular Tyrrhenian coast.

The nearest airport for your arrival is Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO), just 40 kilometers away. A group transfer from the airport to Castellammare de Golfo is included in your tour price.

If you wish to arrive on your own, the best way to reach Castellammare de Golfo from the Palermo airport is to take the train from the airport. The journey can take a little over an hour. The fare is around 20 USD.

Departure

Your journey concludes in Selinunte, home to majestic Greek ruins overlooking the sea. The nearest airport is again the Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO), about 95 kilometers away. A group transfer back to the airport is included in your tour price.

Weather

The best weather for cycling in western Sicily is found in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when the days are sunny, the air is fresh, and the countryside bursts with color. In these months, expect pleasant highs between 18–27°C (64–81°F), cool mornings, and evenings that make cycling especially comfortable. Fields, vineyards, and coastal reserves are lush and green, and evening coastal breezes create perfect conditions for a ride or a pause by the water.

Summer (July and August) brings hot, dry weather with long, sun drenched days and daytime highs regularly above 30°C (86°F). The Mediterranean is at its warmest for swimming, but midday cycling is best avoided unless you’re well adapted to the heat.

In winter (November–March), temperatures are mild for most of Europe, typically 10–16°C (50–60°F), but rain showers are more frequent, with occasional wind along the coast. Days are shorter, though the landscapes are quiet and serene for those who prefer solitude.

For the richest scenery, the gentlest climate, and the most magical light, plan your Sicilian cycling adventure for late spring or early autumn.

Note: Passport and visa regulations can change at any time. Stay proactive by checking for the latest updates to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey.

Insurance

Medical insurance that covers medical costs in case of an accident during the trip is mandatory to participate in our tours.

We recommend to purchase adequate travel insurance in order to participate in our tours and protect yourself from unforeseen events. Our experience shows that guests who purchase travel insurance—including coverage for all activities on the itinerary, trip cancellation, interruption, delay, baggage damage, loss or theft, personal accident, death and repatriation costs, medical and emergency expenses (including Covid-19), and personal liability—travel with greater peace of mind.

Can I use my credit card insurance?

Yes, as long as it meets our requirements and provides adequate coverage. Ensure you have an emergency contact number and policy number available.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Purchase travel insurance as soon as you've paid in full or booked your flights.

Is proof of travel insurance required?

Yes. You must provide your insurer's name, policy number, and emergency contact via our reservation form. This is mandatory. If you cannot provide proof, you’ll need to purchase insurance before traveling with us.

Does Art of Bicycle Trips sell travel insurance?

We do not sell travel insurance directly, as we believe our customers should have the freedom to choose a policy that best suits their needs. However, we recommend Insured Nomads as a great starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

We provide an app-based navigation system that can also be used offline. You can download the app to your phone in advance, and we will share the login details ahead of your trip. Since the app works offline, it helps conserve your phone's battery during use.

For minor issues like punctures, the guests are provided with a self-repair kit, which includes tools to help them fix such minor issues. The exact contents of the kit depend on the type of bike, terrain and other factors, and will be communicated to you closer to your date of departure. However, usually such a kit includes tire levers, a spare tube, a patch kit, and a pump, allowing riders to fix the problem themselves. In some cases, the kit may only include a pump or a repair foam.

Self-guided riders are expected to be independent in handling these minor problems. While there are some bike shops along the route, they are limited. If you are unsure about how to repair a puncture, we recommend considering a guided or van-supported trip instead.

For major mechanical failures, such as a cable break, the guests can contact the emergency support number provided. The support team will help coordinate a solution, which could include dispatching a local mechanic, suggesting a nearby bicycle shop for repairs, or sending a vehicle to pick up the rider. Please note that all support services will be provided on a chargeable basis, and assistance may take time, so we advise being prepared for potential delays.

We provide 24/7 emergency support by phone for any medical emergencies during the tour. Our team will assist in coordinating medical care, guiding you to the nearest healthcare facility, and ensuring you receive the necessary support. The national emergency system is reliable and effective, and in the event of a serious accident, contacting them is highly recommended. However, due to our distance from certain areas, response times may be longer. We strongly recommend having appropriate travel insurance, and we will do everything we can to ensure your safety and well-being during an emergency.

The fitness level required for each trip is indicated by the "level" of the tour, which in turn is mentioned on each tour page right next to the price and the trip duration.

Easy: The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle climbs.

Moderate: The terrain is either mostly flat or consists of rolling hills with a few challenging climbs. There could also be a few days with longer riding distances of up to 75 kms (45 miles)

Difficult: The terrain is mostly hilly with strong elevation gains and/or has long days on the bike. Such trips are recommended for intermediate to advanced cyclists.

Please note that we usually bike around 4-5 hours per day irrespective of the level of the trip.

You can exchange currency at the airport itself, or at ATMs in larger cities. Most commercial establishments will accept international credit cards for payments, though its good to carry some local currency with you at all times.

The meeting time on Day 1 is mentioned in your travel planner shared with you. You can arrive either on the morning of Day 1 depending on the meeting time, or book a pre-tour night to arrive a day earlier.

Yes, we can provide helmets. However, we recommend that guests try to bring their own helmets, as these are items of a personal nature.

Yes, panniers will be provided.

Your luggage will be picked up at the reception of your hotel every morning by 9.00am.

It will be delivered to the next hotel before 5pm. Most of the time it is delivered in the early afternoon itself.

We recommend that you carry no more than 2 bags together weighing up to 15kgs for this trip. You can have one large bag, which contains all your clothing and gear needed for the trip, and one small bag that contains essential items you will frequently need such as passport etc. Please note that once a bag gets loaded in the luggage transfer vehicle, you may not have access to it till later in the evening when you reach the hotel for the night.
