Syracuse to Mt Etna Sicily UNESCO Road Bike Tour
This self-guided road bike tour takes you from ancient Syracuse to Mt. Etna, passing through the unique UNESCO-listed landscape of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. A series of 8 beautiful towns, these are recognised by UNESCO for their outstanding Baroque architecture, town planning, and artistic expression, together forming one of the most remarkable cultural landscapes in Europe.
Starting in Siracusa, you roll past ancient streets and baroque piazzas before climbing into the rugged Iblei or Hybalaen canyons. Each stage brings a new flavor of the island: the golden stone of Noto, the chocolate of Modica, the lively streets of Ragusa, and the pottery of Caltagirone.
Quiet country roads lead through villages that feel unchanged for centuries, while vast fields of citrus and prickly pear remind you of Sicily’s deep farming traditions.
The highlight comes as you approach mighty Mt. Etna, cycling through lava landscapes with the smoking crater always on the horizon.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Siracusa
Arrive in Siracusa, where ancient history and sea views greet you. Settle into your hotel and take time to explore the old streets of Ortigia, with its baroque squares, charming cafés, and vibrant harbor atmosphere.
Stroll along the waterfront and soak up the evening light before enjoying dinner in a local trattoria. This is your chance to adjust to the Sicilian rhythm, relax after travel, and get excited for the adventure ahead. Bikes are prepared, maps are ready, and tomorrow the journey truly begins.

Day 2: Noto
Pedal out of Siracusa and climb into the Climiti mountains, taking in sweeping views over the Catania plain and the looming silhouette of Mt. Etna. Speed down twisting descents into the Anapo Valley before riding through the countryside toward the coast.
The final climb challenges your legs as you approach the Cavagrande del Cassibile, a nature reserve cut with deep gorges. Your ride ends in Noto, the jewel of Sicilian baroque, where ornate palaces and golden stone glow in the evening sun.

Day 3: Palazzolo Acreide
Climb steadily into the Iblei plateau and discover layers of history along the route. Visit the ruins of Noto Antica, destroyed by an earthquake, before rolling toward Castelluccio and enjoying a thrilling downhill stretch. The road leads you back uphill to the twin treasures of Modica and Ragusa, both UNESCO World Heritage sites and masterpieces of baroque architecture.
Stop in Modica for its famous chocolate, then continue through scenic valleys and villages. Your journey finishes in Palazzolo Acreide, a charming town with ancient Greek roots and striking baroque façades.

Day 4: Caltagirone
Ride across the Iblei into the Erei mountains, weaving through rustic villages that capture the spirit of inland Sicily. Pass Cassaro, Ferla, and Buccheri before reaching Vizzini, each town revealing quiet squares and timeless traditions. The undulating terrain keeps the day lively as you climb and descend through the hills. Arrive in Caltagirone, celebrated worldwide for its ceramics.
Wander the famous staircase adorned with colorful tiles or browse artisan workshops. After a rewarding day in the saddle, enjoy the vibrant artistry and heritage that make this town such a distinctive stop.

Day 5: Caltagirone
Set out on a scenic loop through Sicily’s agricultural heartland. The route passes wide fields and prickly pear groves, showing why Romans once called this region the island’s granary. Along the way, you can visit Piazza Armerina, home to the Villa Romana del Casale and its breathtaking mosaic floors.
Ride back to Caltagirone with a deeper sense of Sicily’s rural traditions. The relaxed loop gives your legs a lighter day while still offering rich history and plenty of rolling countryside views to enjoy before dinner.

Day 6: Nicolosi
Descend from Caltagirone into a fertile valley before climbing again toward the lively villages of Mineo and Militello. Citrus groves and farmland spread across the Catania plain, with Mt. Etna looming larger on the horizon. The volcano dominates the skyline, often with smoke drifting from its crater.
From Paternò, begin the steady ascent toward Nicolosi, a village nestled on Etna’s slopes. Here, Sicilian hospitality meets mountain charm, and you rest at the foot of Europe’s highest active volcano, ready for tomorrow’s ultimate challenge.

Day 7: Nicolosi
Take on the grand finale: a full circumnavigation of Mt. Etna. Two long climbs carry you past lava fields and dramatic black rock landscapes, reaching heights of nearly 1,900 meters above sea level. The challenge rewards you with spectacular views across Sicily, where sky, sea, and volcano meet.
For a shorter option, tackle one climb and savor the scenery at a gentler pace. Return to Nicolosi with a sense of achievement and memories of conquering Sicily’s most iconic natural landmark.

Day 8: Departure
Say farewell to Nicolosi and Mt. Etna, carrying home the memories of rugged climbs, sweeping descents, and the warmth of Sicilian culture. Whether exploring more of Sicily’s volcanic landscapes, relaxing by the sea, or heading back to daily life, you leave with stories of baroque towns, ancient mosaics, and the thrill of riding in the shadow of Europe’s most powerful volcano.

Frequently Asked Questions
We provide an app-based navigation system that can also be used offline. You can download the app to your phone in advance, and we will share the login details ahead of your trip. Since the app works offline, it helps conserve your phone's battery during use.
For minor issues like punctures, the guests are provided with a self-repair kit, which includes tools to help them fix such minor issues. The exact contents of the kit depend on the type of bike, terrain and other factors, and will be communicated to you closer to your date of departure. However, usually such a kit includes tire levers, a spare tube, a patch kit, and a pump, allowing riders to fix the problem themselves. In some cases, the kit may only include a pump or a repair foam.
Self-guided riders are expected to be independent in handling these minor problems. While there are some bike shops along the route, they are limited. If you are unsure about how to repair a puncture, we recommend considering a guided or van-supported trip instead.
For major mechanical failures, such as a cable break, the guests can contact the emergency support number provided. The support team will help coordinate a solution, which could include dispatching a local mechanic, suggesting a nearby bicycle shop for repairs, or sending a vehicle to pick up the rider. Please note that all support services will be provided on a chargeable basis, and assistance may take time, so we advise being prepared for potential delays.
We provide 24/7 emergency support by phone for any medical emergencies during the tour. Our team will assist in coordinating medical care, guiding you to the nearest healthcare facility, and ensuring you receive the necessary support. The national emergency system is reliable and effective, and in the event of a serious accident, contacting them is highly recommended. However, due to our distance from certain areas, response times may be longer. We strongly recommend having appropriate travel insurance, and we will do everything we can to ensure your safety and well-being during an emergency.
The fitness level required for each trip is indicated by the "level" of the tour, which in turn is mentioned on each tour page right next to the price and the trip duration.
Easy: The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle climbs.

Please note that we usually bike around 4-5 hours per day irrespective of the level of the trip.
You can exchange currency at the airport itself, or at ATMs in larger cities. Most commercial establishments will accept international credit cards for payments, though its good to carry some local currency with you at all times.
The meeting time on Day 1 is mentioned in your travel planner shared with you. You can arrive either on the morning of Day 1 depending on the meeting time, or book a pre-tour night to arrive a day earlier.
Yes, we can provide helmets. However, we recommend that guests try to bring their own helmets, as these are items of a personal nature.

You can have one large bag, which contains all your clothing and gear needed for the trip, and one small bag that contains essential items you will frequently need such as passport etc. Please note that once a bag gets loaded in the luggage transfer vehicle, you may not have access to it till later in the evening when you reach the hotel for the night.
