Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Corte
Begin your Corsican adventure with an arrival in Corte, the historic heart of the island. This former capital is easily accessible by train from either Bastia or Ajaccio. Spend your first evening exploring the charming old town with its impressive citadel perched on rocky heights.

Day 2: Calacuccia
After a short transfer from Corte, your hiking begins deep within the spectacular Scala Santa Regina gorge. The trail ascends alongside towering cliffs, providing magnificent views over the rushing Golo river far below. Traditional mule paths lead through shaded chestnut groves and open pastures before reaching the peaceful shores of Calacuccia lake.

Day 3: Verghio
Today presents a rewarding full day of walking through constantly changing terrain. The route passes the impressive Radule waterfall and isolated shepherd huts before joining a section of the renowned GR20 trail. Dense Verghio forest provides shade as you make your way to the mountain hotel at Col de Vergio. Natural rock pools along the way offer refreshing swimming opportunities.

Day 4: Evisa
Crossing over Col de Verghio, the path descends beneath the canopy of magnificent Laricio pine trees endemic to Corsica. The trail winds through the beautiful Aitone forest, crossing clear mountain streams with their inviting pools. Watch for semi-wild pigs foraging among the trees before arriving in the picturesque village of Evisa, surrounded by ancient chestnut groves.

Day 5: Porto
The route descends through the breathtaking Spelunca gorge, currently closed for foot traffic but offering alternative paths. After passing through the traditional village of Ota, choose between a scenic ridge walk with sweeping gulf views or a gentler descent to the small seaside harbor of Porto. The dramatic landscape provides memorable hiking throughout the day.

Day 6: Porto
Enjoy a well-deserved rest day with multiple activity options. Consider a coastal boat excursion to the Scandola Nature Reserve and Girolata, where dolphins are frequently spotted. Alternatively, rent a bicycle or hike to Piana to explore the stunning red rock formations of the Calanches. The optional walk climbs through Palani forest toward Capu d'Ortu summit before descending to Piana village, with return possible by bus or taxi.

Day 7: Ajaccio
Board the morning bus for a scenic 2.5-hour journey along the coast to Ajaccio, Napoleon's birthplace. Tickets are purchased directly from the driver. The remainder of the day is free to explore the capital city at your own pace, whether relaxing on Mediterranean beaches, visiting historical sites, or experiencing the vibrant local atmosphere.
Day 8: Ajaccio
Your Mare a Mare North adventure concludes after breakfast. Depart from Ajaccio at your leisure, carrying memories of Corsica's spectacular mountain and coastal landscapes.

Arrival Travelers can fly into Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport or Bastia–Poretta Airport, the two main gateways to Corsica in France. From Bastia Airport, visitors can take the Corsican Railway train to Corte, the starting point of the Mare a Mare North trail. Travelers arriving at Ajaccio Airport can reach Corte by regional buses operated by the Corsica Bus Network, taxi, or rental car.
Departure
The tour usually ends in Ajaccio, where travelers can enjoy the city’s beaches, historic center, and lively atmosphere before departure. From Ajaccio, flights depart regularly from Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport to major French cities such as Paris, Nice, and Marseille. In addition, ferry services connect Ajaccio with mainland France and Italy, providing convenient onward travel options.
The best time to hike the Mare a Mare North trail is between May and October, when weather conditions are most suitable for walking.
May and June bring mild temperatures around 15–26 °C (59–79 °F), blooming wildflowers, and relatively quiet trails, making them excellent months for hiking.
July and August are warmer, with temperatures reaching 22–33 °C (72–91 °F), providing perfect opportunities to swim in natural rock pools, though the trails are busier and the heat can be intense.
September and early October offer some of the most pleasant conditions, with comfortable temperatures of 17–27 °C (63–81 °F), fewer visitors, and the beginning of beautiful autumn colors.
During the winter months from November to April, hiking becomes more difficult due to cold weather, snow at higher elevations, and the closure of mountain hotels such as Verghio, resulting in limited services along the route.
