Weather
The best time to hike in Madeira is generally during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer pleasantly mild weather, lush green landscapes, and moderate rainfall, making the trails more enjoyable. Additionally, hiking during these periods allows you to avoid the island’s peak tourist crowds.
Summer (July to August) is also suitable for hiking, especially along coastal or shaded routes. The cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean keeps temperatures manageable, although high-altitude trails can feel warmer and more exposed.
Winter (December to March) brings cooler weather and fewer visitors. While many days are perfect for hiking, be prepared for rapidly changing conditions such as rain, fog, and wind, especially in the northern and mountainous regions. The southern coast remains relatively mild, making it a great option for winter walks.
