Self-Guided Douro International Natural Park Hiking Tour
This 8-day journey invites you to discover the wild beauty of the Douro International Natural Park, the most remote mountainous region of Portugal and one of Europe’s richest natural sanctuaries. Covering 86,500 hectares along the Spanish border, the park is shaped by the Douro River, whose waters carve their way between spectacular cliffs rising up to 350 metres. It is a haven for biodiversity and one of Europe’s most important wildlife reserves, home to rare and endangered species such as the Egyptian vulture, golden eagle, Bonelli eagle, griffon vulture, and black stork.
The adventure begins in Miranda do Douro, a historic town rich in cultural heritage, before leading you along breathtaking cliffs to traditional villages like Picote and Sendim, where ancient crafts and customs still thrive. The landscape is defined by vineyards, olive groves, almond and fig trees, Mirandesa cattle, and the gentle Miranda donkeys. Tucked in a quiet valley lies Europe’s largest juniper plantation, while Felgar enchants with its peaceful charm and wide views. The journey continues to Torre de Moncorvo, capital of the flowering almond trees, where sugar-coated almonds, one of Portugal’s seven Sweet Wonders, add a touch of sweetness.
Regional cuisine made with local produce enriches every stage of the journey. It all culminates with sweeping views of the Douro River and the elegant metal bridge at Pocinho, followed by a scenic train ride to Porto. In this UNESCO World Heritage city, you’ll explore the historic centre and taste the world-renowned Port Wine, a fitting finale to an unforgettable journey.

Its cobbled streets, ancient monuments, and peaceful squares reflect a history preserved over centuries, while the Mirandês language, Portugal’s second official tongue, adds to its unique character.
Cultural pride is also seen in the traditional Pauliteiros de Miranda stick dance, performed in colorful costume and celebrated as a symbol of community spirit.

Day 2: Miranda do Douro
Your Douro International hiking adventure begins with a walk through Miranda do Douro, where the imposing cathedral, historic city walls, and viewpoints over rugged crags set the tone for the journey. Weather
The Douro region is located in northern Portugal which enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The best season to visit is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October), when temperatures are pleasant, the landscapes are lush, and agricultural highlights such as flowering almond trees, budding vines, grape and olive harvests can be observed. Summer (June to August) is generally hot and dry, which is ideal for those who prefer full sun and long hiking days, but it can be less comfortable during midday heat, so early morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended. Winter (November to February) is the off-season, as temperatures are cooler and rainfall increases, though the mild weather still allows for exploration and fewer tourists.
