Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Hochpustertal
Arrive at your hotel in the Hochpustertal valley at your own pace. Free, unguarded parking is available nearby for those traveling by car. Take the rest of the day to settle in, explore the charming alpine village, and prepare for the hiking adventure ahead. Your accommodation provides a comfortable base in this scenic valley setting.

Day 2: Plätzwiese
Begin your trek at the breathtaking Pragser Wildsee, where turquoise waters reflect towering whitewashed cliffs. Hike through dense coniferous forests characteristic of the Pragser Tal valley, one of the Dolomites' hidden gems. Ascend via Rossalm alpine pasture to reach the Plätzwiese plateau, where sweeping panoramas reveal the Cristallo, Tofana, and the famous Three Peaks. A shorter variant starts from Tuscherhof guesthouse, following the Stolla river past erosion-carved rock formations to reach the plateau.

Day 3: Plätzwiese
Explore the Plätzwiese high plateau, nestled beneath the imposing Hohe Gaisl and Kreuzkofel peaks in the largest nature park of the Dolomites. Choose between two summit hikes: the shorter route to Strudelkopf or the more challenging ascent to Dürrenstein. Both options reward you with spectacular 360-degree views encompassing the Three Peaks, Tofana massif, and Monte Cristallo. The region's unique flora and natural lakes add to the mystical atmosphere tied to ancient Fanes legends.

Day 4: Cortina d'Ampezzo
Traverse the Plätzwiese plateau before descending through Knappenfußtal valley to Cimabanche, marking the border between South Tyrol and Belluno. From here, choose the direct public transport route to Cortina d'Ampezzo or take the longer hiking variant via Ospitale and Passo Tre Croci. An optional cable car at Son Forca can shorten the route. Arrive in the elegant mountain resort of Cortina, surrounded by dramatic Dolomite spires.

Day 5: Cortina d'Ampezzo
Experience world-class mountain scenery with multiple route options around Cortina. Take the included Faloria cable car for stunning views of Monte Cristallo, the Cristallo Group, Tofana, and Fanes peaks. Choose the longer route via Forcella Faloria or the scenic Dolomieu Panoramic Trail, both descending to Passo Tre Croci. Alternatively, explore the fascinating Cinque Torri rock towers on a circular walk. The dramatic limestone formations towering overhead create an unforgettable alpine spectacle.

Day 6: Hochpustertal
Take the morning bus to the Three Peaks viewpoint, then hike across Rienzböden and up the Rienztal valley to reach the legendary Drei Zinnen, the UNESCO-listed symbol of the Dolomites. Continue to the famous Dreizinnenhütte mountain hut beneath the imposing north faces. Your route passes below Paternkofel, site of intense World War I battles where legendary guide Sepp Innerkofler fell. Descend into the scenic Fischleintal valley before taking the bus back to Toblach. A shorter variant offers a circular hike directly from Rifugio Auronzo.
Day 7: Departure
Depart at your leisure or extend your stay to further explore the region. Additional nights in Villabassa or Dobbiaco can be arranged to discover more trails, visit local villages, or simply relax in the alpine surroundings.

Arrival
Travellers can reach the starting point of the tour in Hochpustertal (Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco) through multiple convenient options. By train, which is an eco-friendly choice, you can travel from Innsbruck via the Brenner/Brennero route to Franzensfeste/Fortezza, then change to the Pustertal/Valle Pusteria – Lienz line and get off at Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco depending on your hotel location. If travelling by car, take the A22 motorway via Brenner/Brennero to Brixen/Bressanone, exit at “Brixen-Pustertal,” and continue along the SS49 through the Pustertal/Valle Pusteria valley. Alternatively, you can drive via the scenic Felbertauernstraße to Lienz in Eastern Tyrol (Austria) and continue into Italy. By air, the nearest airports are Innsbruck Airport, Treviso (Sant'Angelo – Antonio Canova Airport), and Venice Marco Polo Airport, from where transfers to the hotel can be arranged on request.
Departure
At the end of the tour, departure is typically from the Hochpustertal area, usually Toblach/Dobbiaco. Travellers can return conveniently by retracing their route. By train, take the Pustertal/Valle Pusteria line to Franzensfeste/Fortezza and continue via the Brenner/Brennero route to Innsbruck or other major cities. If travelling by car, follow the SS49 back to Brixen/Bressanone and rejoin the A22 motorway. For air travel, transfers can be arranged back to Innsbruck, Treviso, or Venice airports. This flexible connectivity ensures a smooth and well-connected journey for both arrival and departure.
The Dolomites offer varied hiking conditions throughout the year, with each season presenting different experiences.
The best time for hiking is September, when temperatures range between 10–20°C (50–68°F), offering stable weather, clear skies, and fewer crowds, making it ideal for enjoying panoramic mountain views.
The good season extends from late June to August, with temperatures between 10–25°C (50–77°F); during this time, all trails and mountain huts are open, although July and August can be crowded and occasionally warm.
The mixed season includes May and October, where temperatures range from 5–15°C (41–59°F); however, weather conditions can be unpredictable, with possible snow in May and early snowfall or hut closures in October.
The off-season spans from November to April, when temperatures often drop below 0°C (32°F) at higher altitudes, and heavy snowfall makes most hiking trails inaccessible, limiting activities mainly to winter sports.

When should I buy travel insurance?
Purchase travel insurance as soon as you've paid in full or booked your flights.
