Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Mindelo
Arrive on the island of São Vicente and transfer to your hotel in the lively coastal city of Mindelo. Known as the cultural and musical heart of Cape Verde, the town blends Portuguese colonial heritage with strong African influences. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to take a relaxed walk through the city center, exploring its colorful streets, waterfront atmosphere and vibrant local life.
Mindelo has long been associated with music and creativity, and its welcoming ambiance provides an ideal introduction to the islands. Settle into your accommodation and prepare for the adventures ahead as you begin discovering the unique character of Cape Verde.

Day 2: Paul Valley
This morning transfer to the port and board the ferry for a one hour crossing to Santo Antão. On arrival in Porto Novo, meet your taxi driver for a transfer to the central ridges of the island. Your hike begins at the impressive Cova crater, where pine and mimosa trees frame the volcanic landscape.
From here the trail descends along winding paths through dramatic northern valleys toward Chã de Manuel dos Santos. As the scenery shifts from high volcanic terrain to cultivated slopes, you will gain your first glimpse of Santo Antão’s lush agricultural landscapes. Continue on foot to your accommodation in the upper Paul Valley where you settle in for two nights.

Day 3: Paul Valley
Begin the day on foot directly from your accommodation as you explore the lush landscapes of the Paul Valley, considered one of the most fertile and scenic areas of the island. The trail climbs gradually toward the Pico d'Antonio pass, offering sweeping views over terraced farmland and tropical vegetation.
Along the way, you may stop at the small stand run by local residents Alcinda and Sandra, where water, coffee and homemade jams are available. This is a pleasant place to pause and enjoy your picnic. The route then continues downhill through vibrant agricultural scenery where sugar cane, banana trees, manioc and coffee thrive.
After completing the walk, return by transfer to your accommodation in the valley.

Day 4: Ponta do Sol
After breakfast, transfer to the village of Coculi, one of the historic centers of Santo Antão’s central valleys. The walk begins in the peaceful valley of Figueiral before continuing through the agricultural landscapes of João Afonso and Chã das Pedras. Terraced slopes support a variety of crops including banana trees, coffee plants, manioc and sugar cane.
In João Afonso you will meet your host Augusta and take part in the preparation of the traditional Cape Verdean dish cachupa, a stew made with dried beans and corn and served with meat. After enjoying the meal, continue walking through the valley scenery toward Ribeirão before meeting your taxi for the transfer to the coastal village of Ponta do Sol.

Day 5: Cruzinha
From the fishing village of Ponta do Sol, begin a spectacular coastal hike carved into volcanic cliffs. The trail follows a dramatic balcony path built into basalt rock and ash, creating sweeping views over the Atlantic Ocean. The route rises and falls along the rugged coastline, passing through the small village of Corvo and the settlement of Formiguinhas.
Along the way you will encounter abandoned villages and a striking black sand beach, reminders of the region’s remote history. The scenery remains constantly impressive as the path winds along steep cliffs above the sea. Eventually arrive in the quiet fishing village of Cruzinha where your oceanfront accommodation awaits for a two night stay.

Day 6: Cruzinha
Today offers a well deserved break after several days of hiking. Spend the day relaxing at your oceanfront accommodation in Cruzinha, a peaceful setting facing the Atlantic. The hotel provides inviting spaces designed for rest and recovery. You may enjoy the swimming pool, unwind in comfortable relaxation areas or take advantage of the games room.
For those seeking additional relaxation, massages and a jacuzzi are also available. The tranquil coastal surroundings encourage you to slow down and recharge your energy before continuing the journey through Santo Antão’s remarkable landscapes.

Day 7: Ribeira das Patas
Transfer today along the famous Rope Road, a remarkable engineering achievement built over nearly thirty years across steep terrain. The road connects Ribeira Grande to Porto Novo and offers impressive panoramic views along the way. Your walk begins at Espongeiro and follows a wooded ridge rich with stories of past settlements.
Along the route you pass abandoned villages where traces of earlier communities remain. Descend into the fertile valley of Ribeira da Bananeira where banana trees and yam crops flourish before the landscape transitions once again to forests of pine and acacia. Continue toward the dramatic cirque of Ribeira das Patas, where towering basalt walls create a striking geological setting for your stay.

Day 8: Ribeira das Patas
Your final hike explores the southern foothills of Santo Antão. The route leads through the rugged terrain shaped by the Ribeira das Patas canyon, where dramatic geological formations dominate the landscape. Basalt needles rise sharply above the valley, creating a powerful natural setting. Climb gradually toward the ridges before descending into the Ribeira Alta valley on the greener northern side.
Here the scenery changes again, revealing sugar cane fields and banana plantations cultivated along the slopes. At the small hamlet of Alto Mira you meet your driver for the transfer back to Ribeira das Patas, where you spend another evening surrounded by the impressive mountain scenery.

Day 9: Mindelo
This morning transfer to Porto Novo to catch the ferry back to Mindelo on São Vicente. After arriving, enjoy free time to explore the city and discover its colonial heritage. Notable landmarks include the Governor's Palace with its exhibition dedicated to the singer Césaria Evora, the lively Rua de Lisboa and its covered fruit and vegetable market, and the Belém Tower modeled after the famous monument in Lisbon.
The fish market and Amilcar Cabral Square provide a glimpse into everyday local life. In the afternoon meet your private driver guide for a tour across the island including Praia Grande, Baia das Gatas and the summit of Monte Verde before returning to Mindelo.

Day 10: Departure
After breakfast, your Cape Verde journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, transfer to the airport for your return journey or continue your travels with an extension to the island of Fogo. The morning provides a final opportunity to reflect on the diverse landscapes and cultural encounters experienced throughout the trip, from the vibrant streets of Mindelo to the dramatic mountain trails of Santo Antão.
With its blend of volcanic scenery, agricultural valleys and coastal paths, the archipelago offers a memorable hiking experience that captures the spirit of the Atlantic islands.
