Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Pakse
We start our adventure in Pakse, the gateway to southern Laos. After settling into our riverside hotel, we take a gentle walking or bike ride through town visiting the market and colonial-era buildings. These colonial buildings tell stories of French influence, while the bustling streets show us modern Lao life. As the sun sets, we enjoy dinner along the Mekong River, watching traditional boats drift by in the golden light. It's the perfect introduction to the pace of life we experience over the next nine days.

Day 2: Paksong
We head up to the cool Bolaven Plateau, famous for its coffee and amazing waterfalls. First stop is Tad Yuang waterfall, then we visit the incredible Tad Fane - twin waterfalls that plunge dramatically into a jungle gorge. For those feeling adventurous, we can try ziplining across the falls for an adrenaline rush! We continue to Paksong, a small mountain town. The air is cool and misty here, a nice break from the heat below. We spend the night in our mountain resort, breathing in that fresh highland air.

Day 3: Tad Lo
Today we explore local villages and coffee farms before heading to beautiful Tad Lo. We set out on a trek through forest paths and along rivers, meeting villagers of Katu and Ta Oy minorities and even join a coffee roasting session. The 11 Km trek takes us through jungle to Tad Soung waterfall before ending at Tad Lo. Tonight we sleep at a simple lodge right by the waterfall - the sound of cascading water will be our natural lullaby. It's an authentic experience of rural Lao life.

Day 4: Pakse
We wake up to fresh mountain air and enjoy a relaxed morning at Tad Lo. Later we head back toward Pakse, but we're not rushing. We stop at Pha Suam waterfall to visit smaller falls and local farms along the way. There's plenty of time to taste the locally grown coffee. By evening we are back in Pakse for dinner by the river, sharing stories of our mountain adventures and getting ready for tomorrow's temple exploration.

Day 5: Champasak
We cycle across the Mekong and head south to historic Champasak, once the center of an ancient kingdom. The main attraction is Wat Phu, a UNESCO World Heritage temple that's older than Angkor Wat. We climb the hillside temple complex with its incredible views over the Mekong Valley. The stone carvings and ancient architecture tell stories of the powerful Khmer civilization that once ruled here. In the afternoon we relax at our boutique lodge overlooking the river, wandering the quiet streets of Champasak with their charming colonial buildings. It's like stepping back in time.

Day 6: Done Khone
This morning, we set off on a scenic two-hour drive to the edge of the Mekong archipelago, where adventure and tranquility intertwine. Boarding a local ferry, we glide into Si Phan Don — the 4,000 Islands, a magical mosaic of waterways, palm-fringed islets, and timeless riverside life.
Our first stop is Don Khong, the largest island, where time seems to flow as gently as the Mekong itself. From here, another short ferry takes us to Don Som, a serene island dotted with rice paddies, village homes, and water buffalo cooling off in the shallows—far from the usual tourist trail.
Cycling onward, we cross the historic French-built bridge linking Don Det and Don Khone, where rustic charm meets spellbinding sunsets. Tonight, we stay on Don Khone, a peaceful haven offering sweeping views toward the Cambodian border—a perfect finale to a day steeped in the calm rhythm of river life.
This lush, unspoiled corner of southern Laos is a true hidden gem—where the Mekong whispers stories of another world.

Day 7: Ban Kiat Ngong
Today, we bid farewell to the islands and journey to the serene Kingfisher Eco Lodge, nestled within the wild beauty of the Xe Pian National Protected Area.
In the afternoon, lace up your boots for a guided trek through the Xe Pian wetlands, a haven for birdlife and grazing water buffalo. With a bit of luck and you might even catch sight of wild elephants moving gracefully across the distant plains.
As the sun dips below the horizon, unwind on your private deck, the sounds of nature your only companion, and watch the wetlands glow gold in the fading light—a moment of pure, untamed tranquility.

Day 8: Ban Kiat Ngong
As dawn breaks, we set out on a short but rewarding hike up Phou Asa Hill, where the mysterious ruins of an ancient temple await. Scattered across the summit are striking stone columns—stacked like natural sculptures—that seem to stand guard over the centuries-old site. From the top, sweeping views unfold across the vast southern plains of Laos, bathed in golden morning light.
As evening descends, we gather for a traditional Baci ceremony—a heartfelt Lao ritual of blessing and goodwill. Locals tie white cotton strings around your wrists, wishing you health, happiness, and safe travels. It’s a deeply moving experience, a genuine expression of Lao warmth and spiritual connection.
Day 9: Departure
After breakfast, we bid farewell to the serene wetlands and make our way back to Pakse. Depending on our travel plans, we are transferred to the airport for onward flight or continue toward the Thai border. It’s time to say goodbye to Laos, carrying home unforgettable memories of its rivers, temples, and tranquil charm.
