Day 2: Sapa

Upon your early morning arrival at the train station, transfer to the misty mountain town of Sapa. After freshening up and enjoying breakfast, take a short drive to the cable car station to begin your ascent to Fansipan.

Standing at 3,143 meters, Fansipan is the highest mountain in the Indochinese peninsula, including Laos and Cambodia. The cable car ride lasts about 15 minutes, followed by a climb of approximately 600 steps to reach the summit. You may also choose to take the funicular to the top for an additional cost instead of climbing the stairs.

From the peak, enjoy sweeping views of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, lush forests, and the scenic Muong Hoa Valley. If you prefer to walk down, you can stop to visit Bao An Thien Tu, Bich Van Thien Tu, the large copper Buddha statue, and the Guanyin statue. If taking the funicular down, a short climb of a few steps is still required.

In the afternoon, visit Thac Bac, also known as Silver Waterfall. The best time to see it is during summer, from June to October, when the water flows most powerfully. Climb the stairs for about 15 minutes to reach the viewpoint, where you will witness the waterfall cascading dramatically into the stream below, surrounded by impressive mountain scenery.

Transfer back to Sapa town and enjoy a relaxed stroll through the town center, visiting landmarks such as the Stone Church and the local market.

Visit the largest valley in the area, known for offering some of the finest views of Vietnam’s golden terraced rice fields.

After exploring Lao Chai, continue your walk to Ta Van village, home to the Giay people. This small ethnic group is known for its rich cultural heritage and charming houses set among rice paddies. The scenery throughout the day is remarkable, providing excellent opportunities for landscape photography.

In the evening, enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at a homestay with a local family in Ta Van village.

Day 4: Ban Ho

After breakfast, say farewell to your host family and set out on a full-day hike to Ban Ho. The trail leads you through scenic terraced rice fields and quiet bamboo forests, where you can breathe in the fresh mountain air and take in the beautiful surroundings.

Your first stop is Giang Ta Chai village, situated about 1,400 meters above sea level. Surrounded by more than 50 hectares of natural forest, the village is home to the Red Dao community. Here, you will gain insight into their daily routines and distinctive cultural traditions.

Continue on to Su Pan village, a small settlement made up of four hamlets inhabited by Black H’mong and Red Dao families. From this vantage point, enjoy sweeping views across Muong Hoa Valley.

After exploring Su Pan, follow a narrow jungle path to Ban Lech village, a H’mong community located at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. From here, you can admire expansive views of the valley stretching toward Sapa.

Next, walk downhill to visit another Red Dao village, where you will learn about their traditional herbal medicine practices and how forest plants are used to treat various ailments.

Finally, arrive in Ban Ho village, home to the Tay people. Settle into a local homestay for the night and enjoy a warm, home-cooked dinner.

From there, begin a scenic hike along unspoiled forest trails toward the quiet valley of Nam Cang. Largely untouched by mass tourism, this peaceful area offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and gain deeper insight into the lives of the Red Dao community.

Red Dao women are known for wearing some of the most vibrant and intricately designed traditional costumes among Vietnam’s ethnic groups. They are also well respected for their knowledge of herbal medicine, traditional healing baths, and detailed embroidery. During your visit, you may have the chance to explore the village’s long-standing silver workshops, where skilled artisans continue to handcraft necklaces, bracelets, and charms using traditional methods passed down through generations.

Sapa has a unique four-season mountain climate. The best time for hiking is from March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn), when temperatures are mild (10-23°C), skies are clearer, and rainfall is moderate. September and October are particularly spectacular for golden rice terraces during harvest season. Summer (June-August) brings lush green landscapes but more rain and mist, with temperatures around 20°C. Winter (December-February) is cold (0-14°C) with occasional frost and fog, though it can offer magical misty scenery. Spring offers blooming flowers and comfortable hiking conditions, while autumn provides crisp air and stunning harvest views. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so be prepared for all conditions regardless of season.

Before venturing on your adventure, make sure you're equipped with essential travel advice, including security updates, local laws, and crucial passport and visa information. Start by visiting the official government website of your home country for accurate and reliable guidance:

Note: Passport and visa regulations can change at any time. Stay proactive by checking for the latest updates to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey.

Medical insurance that covers medical costs in case of an accident during the trip is mandatory to participate in our tours.

We recommend purchasing adequate travel insurance to protect yourself from unforeseen events. Our experience shows that guests who purchase travel insurance—including coverage for all activities on the itinerary, trip cancellation, interruption, delay, baggage damage, loss or theft, personal accident, death and repatriation costs, medical and emergency expenses (including Covid-19), and personal liability—travel with greater peace of mind.

Is proof of medical insurance required?

Yes. You must provide your insurer's name, policy number, and emergency contact via our reservation form. This is mandatory. If you cannot provide proof, you’ll need to purchase insurance before traveling with us.

Can I use my credit card insurance?

Yes, as long as it meets our requirements and provides adequate coverage. Ensure you have an emergency contact number and policy number available.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Purchase travel insurance as soon as you've paid in full or booked your flights.

Does Art of Bicycle Trips sell travel insurance?

We do not sell travel insurance directly, as we believe our customers should have the freedom to choose a policy that best suits their needs. However, we recommend Insured Nomads as a great starting point.
