Day 1: Wissembourg

Your journey begins in the historic town of Wissembourg, located at the entrance to the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park. After arriving and settling into your hotel, take time to explore the town’s charming streets and rich architectural heritage. A highlight is the Saint Pierre et Saint Paul abbey church, considered the second most important Gothic monument in Alsace after the Strasbourg Cathedral.

Walking through the old town reveals half timbered houses, quiet canals, and inviting squares that reflect the town’s long history. Enjoy a relaxed evening discovering the atmosphere of this picturesque Alsatian destination before your hiking adventure begins the following day.

Day 2: Lembach

Leaving Wissembourg, the trail leads into the forested landscapes of the Northern Vosges. The route climbs toward the Col du Pigeonnier and continues through peaceful woodland paths to Pfaffenschlick and the summit of Soultzerkopf. Along the way, the scenery introduces the quiet natural beauty of the region. By afternoon, the path descends toward the village of Lembach.

Here you may visit the Four à Chaux, an impressive structure of the Maginot Line built into a limestone hill, whose underground galleries once sheltered soldiers during the Second World War. After a rewarding day on the trail, settle in for the evening in this historic village.

Day 3: Obersteinbach

Today’s stage leads through one of the most historic sections of the Northern Vosges. Shortly after leaving Lembach, the trail approaches the impressive castles of Loewenstein, Hohenbourg, Fleckenstein, and Froensbourg, which stand on the rocky heights of the Schlossberg. Among them, Fleckenstein Castle is particularly striking, built directly into a massive sandstone cliff and partly carved into the rock itself.

From these elevated viewpoints you can admire wide views over the forests of the Northern Vosges and toward the Palatinate. The trail then continues through woodland paths before descending to the peaceful village of Obersteinbach, nestled among forested hills.

Day 4: Niederbronn les Bains

Departing Obersteinbach, the trail climbs through the scenic Steinbach valley and passes the ruins of Schoeneck Castle. The route continues toward the Grand Wintersberg, the highest point of the Northern Vosges at 581 meters. At the summit, a viewing tower offers expansive views across the Vosges Mountains, the Black Forest, and the Palatinate.

On clear days the distant spire of Strasbourg Cathedral may even be visible. After enjoying the panorama, the trail descends through forest paths via Dittenthal and the Camp Celtique before reaching the spa town of Niederbronn les Bains.

Day 5: Ingwiller Area

Today begins with a climb to the ruins of Wasenbourg Castle overlooking Niederbronn les Bains. From there, the trail continues through a series of charming villages that reflect the traditional character of the region. Passing through Oberbronn, Offwiller, and Rothbach, you walk along well marked paths that connect forested hills with quiet countryside settlements.

The route offers a pleasant combination of nature and local culture as you move steadily through the landscape. By late afternoon you arrive in the Ingwiller area, where you will spend the night.

Day 6: La Petite Pierre

The route continues through the forests of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park as you follow the Meisenbach valley. Gradually climbing toward the summit of the Englischberg, also known as the English Mountain, the trail reaches a historic location where English mercenaries once entrenched themselves during the Hundred Years War in 1365.

The summit offers a wide panoramic view over the surrounding region and features striking sandstone rock formations. From here, you continue along the GR route until reaching the picturesque village of La Petite Pierre.

Day 7: Saverne

Your final hiking stage begins in La Petite Pierre and soon reaches the Rocher du Corbeau, a rocky viewpoint overlooking the surrounding countryside. These distinctive dwellings offer a glimpse into a unique local heritage.

Continuing onward, the path leads through the forests and hills of the Northern Vosges before arriving in Saverne, a historic town often considered the capital of the region.

The most convenient way to reach Wissembourg is via Strasbourg Airport (SXB), located about 70 km away. From the airport, you can take the airport shuttle or tram to Strasbourg railway station, then continue by regional train to Wissembourg.

The train journey typically takes around one hour. Another nearby option is Baden Baden Airport (FKB) in Germany, from where you can travel by taxi or train via Karlsruhe to Wissembourg. Taxis are also available for direct transfers if you prefer a faster and more comfortable journey.

DEPARTURE

Your tour ends in Saverne, France, a charming town in the Northern Vosges region. From Saverne, the easiest way to continue your journey is by train to Strasbourg, which takes about 30 minutes. From Strasbourg railway station, you can reach Strasbourg Airport (SXB) using the airport train shuttle.

Alternatively, you may arrange a taxi from your hotel in Saverne directly to the airport or to Strasbourg if you plan to extend your stay in the city.

The best weather for hiking the GR53 in the Northern Vosges is from May to September, when temperatures are comfortable and trails are usually dry. During this period, daytime temperatures typically range between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F), making conditions ideal for long hiking days.

Spring brings fresh greenery and blooming forests, while summer offers longer daylight hours for relaxed walking. Early autumn can also be pleasant, with cooler air and colorful foliage.

April and October can still be enjoyable but weather can be more unpredictable with cooler temperatures around 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F) and occasional rain. Winter months are generally less suitable for hiking because of cold temperatures, shorter daylight hours, and the possibility of snow or icy trails.
