Arrival

The journey for the Camino de Santiago typically begins by flying into Santiago de Compostela Airport, the nearest airport to the route. From the airport, travelers can take a direct bus to Santiago de Compostela city center, which runs frequently and takes about 20–30 minutes. From Santiago, pilgrims can reach Sarria, the common starting point, either by train (approximately 2.5–3 hours), bus (around 3 hours), or taxi/private transfer (about 1.5–2 hours). Alternatively, travelers arriving in Madrid can take a train or bus to Sarria, or opt for a direct private transfer (around 4.5–5 hours). Taxi and private transfers are the most convenient options, especially for groups or those carrying luggage.

Departure

At the end of the Camino, the journey concludes in Santiago de Compostela. From the city center, travelers can take a bus or taxi back to Santiago de Compostela Airport, which is approximately 20 minutes away. The airport offers domestic and international flights, including connections via major Spanish cities. Alternatively, travelers may choose to continue their journey by taking a train or bus to Madrid or other cities in Spain. Many pilgrims prefer to spend an extra night in Santiago to relax and explore before departure, making the end of the journey more comfortable and memorable.

The best time to walk the route is from April to early June and in September, when temperatures range between 10°C and 22°C, offering pleasant walking conditions, beautiful scenery, and moderate crowds.

April, in particular, is considered an excellent early-season month, with fresh greenery, blooming flowers, and comfortable temperatures around 10°C to 20°C, although occasional light rain can be expected.

March and early October are categorized as good months, with temperatures between 8°C and 18°C.

The summer months of July and August fall under the mixed category, with warmer temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C, bringing a lively atmosphere but also heavy crowds and tiring heat.

In contrast, the off-season from November to February is the least recommended, with colder temperatures between 5°C and 12°C, frequent rainfall, and muddy trails, making the journey more challenging.
