Guided Laya Gasa Trek

The flight into Bhutan is considered one of the most spectacular mountain journeys in the world, offering breathtaking views of the great Himalayas and several of the world’s highest snow-covered peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, and Bhutan’s sacred mountains, Mt. Jomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drakey. As the aircraft descends into the scenic Paro Valley, the first impressions of Bhutan unfold through forested hills, traditional Bhutanese architecture, the winding Pa Chhu River, and the magnificent Paro Dzong overlooking the valley.

Depending on arrival time, there may be an opportunity for a guided visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred Buddhist temples, believed to date back to the 7th century. The day concludes with a welcome dinner and trip briefing before settling in for the night.

Today’s excursion features some of Bhutan’s most iconic attractions and serves as an ideal acclimatization experience before the trek begins. The highlight of the day is the hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliffside overlooking the Paro Valley. Built in 1692, this sacred monastery holds immense spiritual significance in Bhutanese Buddhism.

On the return journey, visit the historic ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, an important fortress that once protected Bhutan from Tibetan invasions during the 17th century. On clear days, breathtaking views of the majestic Mt. Jomolhari, known as the “Mountain of the Goddess,” can be seen from here.

Continue to the National Museum of Bhutan to explore Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage through its remarkable collections of traditional art, artifacts, textiles, and religious relics. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely walk through Paro town and explore local handicraft stores showcasing traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship.

Today marks the beginning of the trek with a scenic walk following the river through forests of blue pine and oak, later passing through rhododendron, birch, fir, and maple trees. The trail is rocky in some sections but remains moderately comfortable, with several wooden bridges crossed along the way.

After trekking through a narrowing valley for several hours, the route passes traditional stopping points such as Shing Karap and Thombuzam at around 3,305m. Ancient trails branching from the valley once connected Bhutan with Tibet through historic mountain passes used for salt trading.

Towards the end of the day, the magnificent Mt. Jomolhari (7,314m) gradually comes into view in the distance. The campsite is set in a spacious clearing directly facing the mountain, offering spectacular Himalayan scenery.

Today’s trek is shorter and more gradual, allowing for a relaxed pace through the beautiful Himalayan landscape. The trail continues alongside the Pa Chhu River, passing small mountain settlements and open valleys surrounded by dramatic scenery. Along the route, the guide will assist with permit formalities at the army checkpoint before continuing towards Jangothang.

The campsite at Jangothang is one of the most spectacular locations on the trek, situated beneath the towering presence of Mt. Jomolhari. In the evening, the ruins of Jangothang Dzong and the surrounding alpine landscape create a truly mystical atmosphere. The area is also known for its rich birdlife and pristine mountain environment.

Today is reserved for rest and acclimatization to help the body adjust to the increasing altitude and colder mountain temperatures. Surrounded by spectacular Himalayan scenery, Jangothang offers excellent opportunities to explore the valley and enjoy panoramic mountain views.

A leisurely hike to the twin lakes of Tshophu is highly recommended as part of the acclimatization process. From here, breathtaking views of the striking Jichu Drakye (6,989m), often compared to the Matterhorn due to its distinctive shape, can be enjoyed. The peaceful alpine surroundings and dramatic mountain landscapes make this one of the most scenic highlights of the trek.

Today’s trek begins by following a mountain stream before crossing a bridge and gradually climbing towards the first ridge. Along the ascent, breathtaking views of Mt. Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherim Gang dominate the Himalayan skyline, creating some of the most spectacular scenery on the trek.

The trail continues through wide alpine valleys before ascending to the Ngye La Pass at 4,870m. After crossing the pass, descend gradually towards Lingshi while enjoying sweeping mountain panoras and distant views of the historic Lingshi Dzong perched above the valley. This ancient fortress once served as an important defensive stronghold and resting place for Buddhist pilgrims traveling through the region.

The campsite is set near Lingshi village at an altitude of 4,010m, surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and peaceful highland scenery.

After leaving the campsite, the trail crosses a stream via a wooden bridge before ascending towards a chorten located below the historic Lingshi Dzong. From here, enjoy magnificent views of green hills, winding rivers, and snow-covered Himalayan peaks surrounding the valley.

The route then descends to Lingshi village, known for its traditional medicinal herbs and remote mountain culture. From the village, the trek continues through scenic landscapes, passing yak herders’ camps and small settlements along the way. Lunch is served at the picturesque village of Goyuna before continuing towards Chebisa village and the nearby campsite beside a peaceful mountain stream.

Today’s trek begins with a steady climb towards the Gogu La Pass at an altitude of 4,440m, taking nearly four hours to reach the top. From the pass, the trail descends through beautiful rhododendron forests into a valley filled with dense birch and fir trees.

The route continues along an undulating trail, crossing streams, yak herders’ camps, and scenic alpine landscapes. Along the way, there may be opportunities to spot blue sheep grazing on the rocky mountain slopes above the valley. The trek passes through the stunning Shakshepasa Valley, regarded as one of the most beautiful sections of the route. A final steep ascent leads to the campsite at Shomuthang, set beside a mountain stream amidst dramatic Himalayan surroundings.

Ascend the valley while criss-crossing streams, climbing to Jhari La at 4,600 meters before descending on switchbacks that become rough and rocky entering rhododendron forest. The trail enters Tsheri Jathang valley, summer grazing ground for rare Himalayan Takin, Bhutan's national animal. Wade across the stream where footbridges are frequently washed away, then cross to the left bank and ascend to Robluthang camp at 4,160 meters elevation.

A long climb leads to Shinche La pass at 5,005 meters, where breathtaking mountain views await and blue sheep may be spotted. After the pass, descend on rough trail crossing numerous streams, then continue through rhododendron forest after lunch. Reach a plateau and pass through cedar forest with fine views of Gangchey Ta peak at 6,840 meters. Camp at Lemithang at 4,140 meters elevation.

Wake up to magnificent views of Gangchey Ta before continuing the trek towards the remote highland village of Laya. Today’s walk is pleasant and scenic, passing through moss-covered forests filled with alpine vegetation and birdsong, with beautiful Himalayan views throughout the journey.

Arrive at Laya, one of Bhutan’s highest settlements, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,800m within the protected region of Jigme Dorji National Park. The village offers a unique glimpse into the traditional lifestyle and culture of Bhutan’s highland communities.

Today is reserved for relaxation and exploration around the beautiful highland village of Laya. Surrounded by dramatic Himalayan landscapes, the day offers an excellent opportunity to interact with the local community, experience the unique culture of the Layap people, and explore the scenic surroundings at a leisurely pace.

Enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere, traditional village life, and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks while resting and acclimatizing amidst the pristine beauty of northern Bhutan.

Today’s journey begins with a scenic descent through alpine landscapes towards the Mo Chhu River. The trail passes through beautiful forests of juniper and fir, crossing remote mountain terrain before reaching Taktsimakha, where the vehicle transfer awaits for the drive to Gasa.

Upon arrival in Gasa, explore the historic Gasa Dzong, a hilltop fortress overlooking the surrounding valleys and mountains of northern Bhutan. Later, unwind at the famous Gasa Hot Springs, known for its natural therapeutic waters, offering the perfect opportunity to relax and rejuvenate after completing the trek.

After breakfast, begin a scenic drive from Gasa to Punakha through lush forests, winding mountain roads, and beautiful Himalayan landscapes. The journey offers stunning views of valleys, rivers, and traditional Bhutanese villages along the way.

Upon arrival, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, considered one of the most beautiful fortresses in Bhutan. Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, this historic dzong serves as the winter residence of the central monastic body and is renowned for its stunning Bhutanese architecture, intricate artwork, and rich cultural significance.

Continue with a walk across the famous Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges, decorated with colorful prayer flags and offering spectacular views of the river valley below. Later, visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang, beautifully located on a ridge overlooking the Punakha and Wangdue valleys, where visitors can experience the peaceful atmosphere of the nunnery and surrounding landscapes.

After breakfast, drive to Kabesa village and enjoy a scenic hike through beautiful paddy fields to visit Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the valley, this magnificent temple is renowned for its intricate Bhutanese architecture, spiritual significance, and panoramic views of the Punakha Valley.

Later, continue towards the riverside grounds of Zomlingthang for a relaxing picnic lunch beside the Punakha River. The area often offers a chance to witness locals enjoying traditional archery, Bhutan’s national sport.

The journey then continues through the lush rice valley of Lobesa to visit Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as the Fertility Monastery and associated with the legendary Buddhist saint known as the “Divine Madman.” The visit includes a pleasant walk through charming villages and picturesque farmland.

After sightseeing, drive towards Thimphu via the scenic Dochula Pass (3,140m), known for its breathtaking mountain views and the beautiful Druk Wangyal Chortens, a collection of 108 memorial stupas surrounded by colorful prayer flags.

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to Buddha Dordenma at Kuensel Phodrang, where the gigantic Buddha statue overlooks the Thimphu Valley and offers spectacular panoramic views of the capital city. From here, enjoy an easy scenic walk along one of Thimphu’s popular hiking trails leading towards Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the city’s oldest and most important temples.

Later, explore some of Thimphu’s cultural highlights, including the Folk Heritage Museum and the Royal Textile Academy, offering fascinating insights into Bhutanese traditions, architecture, and textile craftsmanship.

In the evening, stroll through the lively Crafts Bazaar and local markets of Thimphu, where traditional handicrafts, textiles, and local produce provide a glimpse into everyday Bhutanese life. Afterwards, drive to the beautiful Paro Valley for the final overnight stay before departure.

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward journey. As your memorable adventure through Bhutan comes to an end, bid farewell to the majestic Himalayas, peaceful monasteries, scenic valleys, and warm Bhutanese hospitality.
