San Sebastian to Santander Camino del Norte Bike Tour

Set out on an unforgettable cycling journey along Spain’s rugged northern coastline, where the Pyrenees meet the Bay of Biscay and green mountains roll down to the sea.

Beginning in the culinary capital of San Sebastián, your ride immediately immerses you in the lively spirit of the Basque Country. You will pedal along quiet coastal roads, passing fishing villages with brightly painted boats, and stopping at golden beaches where surfers ride Atlantic waves. The rhythm of the route blends seaside beauty with inland charm—green valleys, rolling hills, and stretches of dramatic cliffs that showcase the untamed side of northern Spain.

As you cross from the Basque Country into Cantabria, the landscapes shift but remain equally captivating. Vineyards and grazing pastures give way to medieval villages with stone towers, Romanesque churches, and bustling plazas perfect for a mid-ride pause. Along the way, you will savor hearty local cuisine, from pintxos to fresh seafood, often paired with crisp Txakoli or Cantabrian cider. The terrain offers a satisfying mix of gentle flats and rolling climbs, always rewarded with sweeping sea views or peaceful countryside.

The journey culminates in Santander, an elegant coastal city where wide boulevards, sandy beaches, and a vibrant port atmosphere provide a celebratory finish. Here you can wander the seaside promenades, explore historic architecture, or simply relax with a well-earned glass of wine while reflecting on the miles covered. More than a cycling trip, this route invites you to experience the culture, flavors, and landscapes of Spain’s untamed northern coast at the perfect pace—on two wheels.

You arrive in San Sebastián, a city that immediately sweeps you off your feet with its elegance and charm. Golden beaches curve around the bay, framed by green hills and a lively promenade where locals stroll at sunset. Day 2: Lekeitio

After breakfast, your bikes arrive and the adventure begins. You leave San Sebastián by climbing Monte Igeldo, rewarded immediately with sweeping views of the city, and the surrounding coastline. The route unfolds like a postcard: rolling green hills, the salty breeze from the sea, and endless vineyards where txakolí wine has been produced for centuries. You pass through Zarautz, an elegant seaside resort, then the striking rock outcrop of Getaria—nicknamed “the Mouse” for its shape.

Fishing villages dot the way, each with harbours bustling with boats and seagulls. Deba, with its laid-back charm, makes a fine stop for coffee or seafood. By afternoon, you reach Lekeitio, a jewel on the Bay of Biscay with its lively harbour and sandy beach. Here, time slows down—you might stroll along the promenade or sit at a terrace watching the sunset paint the waters gold.

Day 3: Mundaka

Today’s ride takes you deeper into the Basque coastline’s rugged beauty. The road follows dramatic cliffs and wave-carved rock formations known as flysch, where millions of years of geological history are on display. The fishing village of Elantxobe appears almost impossibly perched on the hillside, with steep, narrow streets and colourful houses tumbling toward the sea. Soon after, the route turns inland and you follow the Urdaibai Estuary, a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve rich with birdlife and serene waters.

You pause in Guernica, forever etched in history due to the tragic bombing during the Spanish Civil War and immortalized by Picasso’s painting. From here, it’s a short distance to your accommodation, either in Guernica itself or in the coastal village of Mundaka, world-renowned for its perfect left-hand surfing wave. Evening here is peaceful, with the sea and estuary merging in shades of blue and gold.

Day 4: Getxo

Leaving Mundaka, the first stop is Bermeo, a fishing port full of character where brightly painted boats bob in the harbour. A climb brings you to one of the highlights of the tour: the spectacular view of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a tiny chapel clinging to an island rock, linked to the mainland by a winding stone causeway. Fans of Game of Thrones may recognize it as Dragonstone. The ride continues past Bakio, Armintxa, and the coastal town of Plentzia before reaching Getxo, a sophisticated town with elegant villas built by wealthy Basque industrialists.

Your hotel sits at the mouth of the Nervión River, right next to the striking Puente de Vizcaya, a 19th-century transporter bridge and engineering marvel. From here, Bilbao is just a short metro ride away—perfect for an evening visit to the famous Guggenheim Museum or a stroll through the city’s lively streets.

Day 5: Castro Urdiales

This morning begins with a unique experience—you cross the Nervión River using the Puente de Vizcaya transporter bridge, suspended above the water in a gondola. From here, the route traces the estuary toward the open sea, passing Zierbena before turning west once more along the wild coastline. Waves crash against rocky cliffs as you pedal into Cantabria, leaving the Basque Country behind. Soon, the charming fishing town of Castro Urdiales comes into view, with its picture-perfect harbour, Gothic-style church of Santa María, and medieval castle overlooking the sea.

Castro is lively yet relaxed, ideal for wandering its old streets or enjoying fresh seafood with a view of the waterfront. The blend of history, coastal beauty, and small-town charm makes it a perfect stop after a rewarding day in the saddle.

The landscape opens to vast beaches and green hills, leading you into the town of Laredo with its enormous golden beach stretching into the distance. From here, the road hugs the shoreline toward Santoña, framed by the dramatic Monte Buciero.

A short ferry ride carries you across the estuary, a fitting pause before reaching your hotel at Playa de Berria. Santoña is famed for its anchovies, considered some of the best in the world, and sampling them fresh here is almost a rite of passage. With the beach right at your doorstep, the evening invites a leisurely walk along the sand as the waves roll in.

Here, a boat awaits to carry you across the Bay of Santander, a grand finale that delivers you straight into the heart of Cantabria’s elegant capital. Weather

From late March through October, northern Spain’s Basque and Cantabrian coasts offer some of the best cycling weather. Spring (late March to May) brings mild temperatures, blooming countryside, and fewer crowds—perfect for scenic rides, though light rain is common, so a windproof jacket is handy. Summer (June to August) is the warmest, with long daylight hours and plenty of sunshine.

Temperatures along the coast stay pleasant thanks to the Atlantic breeze, making climbs manageable, though July and August are the busiest months. Early autumn (September to October) is often considered the ideal time to ride: the sea remains warm, vineyards and forests turn golden, and the weather is still stable but cooler than midsummer.

By late October, days shorten and rain becomes more frequent, but cycling conditions remain comfortable. Overall, the tour window ensures varied but favorable riding, with spring freshness, summer vibrancy, and autumn colors enhancing every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

We provide an app-based navigation system that can also be used offline. You can download the app to your phone in advance, and we will share the login details ahead of your trip. Since the app works offline, it helps conserve your phone's battery during use.

For minor issues like punctures, the guests are provided with a self-repair kit, which includes tools to help them fix such minor issues. The exact contents of the kit depend on the type of bike, terrain and other factors, and will be communicated to you closer to your date of departure. However, usually such a kit includes tire levers, a spare tube, a patch kit, and a pump, allowing riders to fix the problem themselves. In some cases, the kit may only include a pump or a repair foam.

Self-guided riders are expected to be independent in handling these minor problems. While there are some bike shops along the route, they are limited. If you are unsure about how to repair a puncture, we recommend considering a guided or van-supported trip instead.

For major mechanical failures, such as a cable break, the guests can contact the emergency support number provided. The support team will help coordinate a solution, which could include dispatching a local mechanic, suggesting a nearby bicycle shop for repairs, or sending a vehicle to pick up the rider. Please note that all support services will be provided on a chargeable basis, and assistance may take time, so we advise being prepared for potential delays.

We provide 24/7 emergency support by phone for any medical emergencies during the tour. Our team will assist in coordinating medical care, guiding you to the nearest healthcare facility, and ensuring you receive the necessary support. The national emergency system is reliable and effective, and in the event of a serious accident, contacting them is highly recommended. However, due to our distance from certain areas, response times may be longer. We strongly recommend having appropriate travel insurance, and we will do everything we can to ensure your safety and well-being during an emergency.

The fitness level required for each trip is indicated by the "level" of the tour, which in turn is mentioned on each tour page right next to the price and the trip duration.

Easy: The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle climbs.

Moderate: The terrain is either mostly flat or consists of rolling hills with a few challenging climbs. There could also be a few days with longer riding distances of up to 75 kms (45 miles)

Please note that we usually bike around 4-5 hours per day irrespective of the level of the trip.

You can exchange currency at the airport itself, or at ATMs in larger cities. Most commercial establishments will accept international credit cards for payments, though its good to carry some local currency with you at all times.

The meeting time on Day 1 is mentioned in your travel planner shared with you. You can arrive either on the morning of Day 1 depending on the meeting time, or book a pre-tour night to arrive a day earlier.

Yes, we can provide helmets. However, we recommend that guests try to bring their own helmets, as these are items of a personal nature.

Yes, panniers will be provided.

Your luggage will be picked up at the reception of your hotel every morning by 9.00am.

It will be delivered to the next hotel before 5pm. Most of the time it is delivered in the early afternoon itself.

We recommend that you carry no more than 2 bags together weighing up to 15kgs for this trip. You can have one large bag, which contains all your clothing and gear needed for the trip, and one small bag that contains essential items you will frequently need such as passport etc. Please note that once a bag gets loaded in the luggage transfer vehicle, you may not have access to it till later in the evening when you reach the hotel for the night.
